When we moved into our building in November 2020, we had the pleasure of collaborating with several local businesses, like St. Pierre Woodworking in Floyd, 5Points Creative, Lionberger, and IDG (Interactive Design Group). Barrows became the customer and experienced first-hand the benefit of having local partnerships. We wanted to have a physical representation of our commitment to our community – and what better way to do that than with a 4,800 sq ft mural project!
Chris Clemmer, CEO of Barrows Companies, had the idea for a mural to be painted on the entire rear side of Barrows’ office building that faces the Greenway. Working in collaboration with the Roanoke Arts Commission and Roanoke Parks and Recreation connected them with Nolan-Shafer Mural Crew and Maggie Perrin-Key. It was a match made in artistic heaven.
When Josh Nolan sent his mural project design to the team we were blown away. It was perfect. There wasn’t a single element we wanted to be changed. That never happens in our line of work, so we were totally impressed! This was Josh, Libby, and Maggie’s first project of this scale and medium – corrugated metal. They were able to complete the mural project in half the estimated time, which was a pleasant surprise! They were on 18-foot ladders or scaffolding in 90-degree heat. They were polite, kind, and professional. It was a pleasure to work with them and we’re grateful for the opportunity!
On July 28, 2022, a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was held on site and attended by Mayor Sherman Lea. What better way to ring in a mural highlighting the Appalachian Mountains than with bluegrass music provided by Mason Creek and a two-tier cake provided by Takes the Cake.
